For this design, I used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create it. I used a female model's side profile to create the character of Cinderella. The color scheme for this design was blue and silver-gold. The color blue I chose because of Cinderella’s famous dress. The gold I got from the carriage and her shoes. Even though the Disney film is silver, I added a touch of gold to make it richer. I do believe I showed an advanced knowledge of the software when it comes to the typography style of the title. I wanted the title to stand on its own next to the artwork. Shape, color, form, and texture are highlighted on the cover and corners of the book jacket. A design element I used is a balance between the corners, the main artwork, and the small one above the synopsis. The corner designs are repeated through the front, spine, and back covers.
For this design process, I explored and studied different types of book covers before sketching a rough draft. There isn’t much originality since I kind of based it on Disney’s Cinderella. I created this jacket in August during Walt Disney World’s Princess Week. Plus, I got influenced by the movie to choose the colors I used to create the book jacket. This design took more time and effort since it was one of my first. For ethical guidelines, it was important that the imagery used would represent the story the cover was trying to portray. I looked into different book covers for inspiration.
This piece is another design I created during my free time. I re-visited this piece after receiving some feedback from one of my peers. He pointed out that the sizing and placement of the front cover were colliding. So, I resized the main artwork and changed a bit of the title effect. I also moved it around to guide the reader’s eyes to it. I didn’t change anything from the back cover and spine. Completing this project required a good number of back-and-forth self-critiques. With advice from my family, friends, and even one of my peers, I found changing the front over helpful.
